Award of merit for Corriere from Italian President Sergio Mattarella

TORONTO - The President of The Republic of Italy, His Excellency Sergio Mattarella, in a special ceremony at the Ritz Carlton, held in Toronto, conferred a special commemorative plaque to the Corriere Canadese in recognition of its work in promoting the Italian identity, the Italian language and Italian culture in Canada.
The award, etched on a silver platter, is a rare recognition for any publication, according to the Consul General, Giuseppe Pastorelli. Corriere is the first and only one in North America to receive it.
On hand for the ceremony were the Ambassador of Italy in Canada, His Excellency Claudio Tuffari; the Ambassador of Canada to Italy, his Excellency Peter Mc Govern; the Sottosegretario di Stato for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation (Italy), Benedetto Della Vedova, and the Consul General of Toronto, Giuseppe Pastorelli.

The Hon. Joe Volpe, Publisher, accepted the award on behalf of the Corriere Canadese. He was accompanied by his daughter, Letizia; Sports editor Nicola Sparano; his EA and Office Manager, Rita Ellul, and Supporters of the Corriere, Dan Montesano and Sam Primucci.

With specific reference to the latter two, Consul General Pastorelli, officiating at the ceremony, introduced the “Corriere Team” that, four years ago, during turbulent times for the newspaper industry and the Italian Press and Media, conceived a vision and supported it with human and financial resources to produce a quality communications medium that has both survived and grown.

“It has become the voice of and for the Community”, added Mr. Volpe, “thanks to a dedicated and committed staff that daily works to make sense of the world through the eyes of a Diaspora eager to integrate, contribute and validate its role in a developing society”.

President Mattarella marvelled in appreciation at the quality of the Paper, the breadth of its coverage and the its noteworthy commitment to inform and critique. He commented on how the Corriere Canadese has succeeded in capturing the qualities that have distinguished Italians in the past and hope to promote in the future.

On a lighter note, the newly minted Ambassador Tuffari, reaffirmed that “it is a must read daily” for the Embassy”. It was a sentiment echoed by the Canadian Ambassador, Peter Mc Govern for the Canadian Embassy as well.
Mr. Volpe thanked all and extended warmest wishes to president Mattarella for a most satisfying Canadian visit.
