Dear editor: I attended the public meeting on the Villa Charities Dante Alighieri proposal, May 11. And no I am not Italian. I watched and listened as whispers of skepticism (this is a “done”, no, “dumb”, deal) turned to shouts of anger.

No “leaders”, “decision-makers”, from the sponsoring agencies were there for the “consultation” – at least none that identified themselves. Was the exercise “beneath their dignity”?
Someone lost control of the agenda really quickly. It was painful to watch.
Eventually – maybe it had been planned - the “decision-makers” in this whole ordeal felt they needed to say something. So, one of them, the School Board, sent 3 high school students to address the crowd on their behalf. Cute. This was a crowd of well-versed, educated, financially sound members of society. Not your typical “give them a free loaf of bread and they’ll come” types.
Those present had no patience for such antics and the three grade 10 high school students from Dante Alighieri Academy– who had nothing prepared to say other than “we know this sucks for you, but we like our school and would like a new one” – attracted more than their share of negative reaction, before they were forced to sit down (note to self: investigate new meaning of educational term “academy”).
Could the School Board have a least prepared the students with a better speech, one with facts and figures?  Noneof those grade 10 students will be around, if and when their proposed new school is built, in 2020. The crowd by this point had waited an hour and a half for answers. A long time to hear from the “Leaders” responsible for the planning proposal. The crowd became irate - justifiably so.
The school board finally sent their Messiah to speak to the crowd, another not-so- shy grade 10 student, with a prepared speech. “You guys are all yelling and stuff, what would you do if it were Jesus standing up here”. This had to be a joke.
Listen kid, tell the Leaders who sent you out here as the sacrificial lamb to send us Jesus instead; we’ll get the answers we want.  He doesn’t hide behind anyone.  This crowd was ready for Jesus.  The first question they’d have posed to him: “why have you not blessed the big chiefs with the tongue of the Holy Spirit? Why are they all mute?”
That single utterance of “what would you do if it were Jesus standing up here” backfired.  It sent the City, Villa Charities Inc, the TCDSB and Centro Scuola all running to hide deeper in the hole they have dug for themselves.
They lacked the courage to defend their sacrificial lamb from the wrath of the Community’s tongues. One hesitates to suggest what else they lack.
Jesus turned the tables on the tax collectors and tax evaders, once. Something is awry with the so-called Community chiefs in charge of lot 19. They are playing poker with our tax dollars.
Please, someone call Jesus and personally invite him to the next meeting.
